2010 Camaro SS
2010 Camaro SS
Angelo "The Z Man"

You're looking at the first 2010 Camaro SS to hit New York! This sinister double black Camaro was turning so many heads when we were photographing this car, you'd think we were hosting a wet t-shirt contest!

1980 Chevy Malibu
1980 Chevy Malibu
Al & Steve Sargente

This G-Body runs an S-K Speed built 383 stuffed with a Crower solid roller cam and Edelbrock aluminum heads up top. A Nassau Driveshaft setup transfers the power to the Moser 12-Bolt with 4.10 gears and 32-spline axles, then the 10" Mickey Thompsons do what they can to survive.

1971 Chevy Nova
1971 Chevy Nova
Joe Albrecht

Built completely in house at Joe's fathers' body shop, Thrift-Way Auto Body in Hempstead, this would be the second time it's being built. This 1970 Nova was wrecked at Atco Raceway, only to get rebuilt bigger and better! Joe, with help from his brother John Jr., took care of the body work, while a stout SBC dropped in with ease. Backed by a TH350 and an ATI Treemaster converter, this Nova launches as you see it in the pictures with consistency, also thanks to the Cal-Trac suspension bars and drag radials.
Joe got this car when he was only 15, built it and finished it at 17 where he went on to win the High School Class at the Dividsion 1 Bracket Finals, before finally introducing it to the guardrail at Atco. Now 18 years of age, he pilots this missle again only four months after the crash. A job well done!

1971 Plymouth Roadrunner
1971 Plymouth Roadrunner
Charles Burket

Charles' Roadrunner is a runner indeed! Powered by a 499 cubic inch stoker engine purchased and balanced by the S-K Speed Race Engine Shop, this one houses an Eagle rotating assembly. Breathing duties are handled by an Edelbrock valvetrain, aluminum heads and manifold, with a Demon 850cfm carb perched at the top. A full 3" Flowmaster exhaust system exhales the spent combustion process. All this is backed by a 727 TorqueFlite with an ATI 3500 converter, Cheetah reverse manual vale body and Raybestos clutches for a bulletproof drivetrain. Out back resides an 8-3/4" posi rear with 4.10 gears.

1972 Chevy Chevelle SS
1972 Chevy Chevelle SS
Nick Squicciarini

This 1972 Chevelle SS has had a frame-up restoration done by Nick himself back in 1988. It now runs an LS6 454/450HP crate engine with a Muncie M-22 Rockcrucher built by Brian in our Manual Transmission Warehouse (Nick still has the original engine and transmission in storage). The lungs of this Chevelle consists of an 800cfm Holley double pumper working in unison with a GM high rise aluminum intake and rectangular port heads. The heart is a 4-bolt main block with a GM mechanical cam and a steel crank. An MSD ignition setup ignites the senses, while Hooker Super Competition headers and a Flowmaster exhaust system eliminates the unwanted gases. Driveline chores are handled by an Auburn posi equipped 12-bolt with 3.73 Richmond gears.

1957 Chevy Bel Air
1957 Chevy Bel Air
Tom & Jennifer Reek

This super clean 1957 Bel Air runs a JA Performance BBC producing about 700 horses, not counting the 250 HP shot of spray. It sits in front of a built Select Performance TH400 with a Ford 9" and 3.90 gears rounding out the driveline duties. This combination yielded 9.81 ET's at a recent trip to Island Dragway in NJ! Special thanks to Frank Calabaro, Dave Rook, and the head pit crew chief Rob Mitchell from Team Chronic.

1967 Ford Mustang
1967 Ford Mustang
Dennis Glocksien

This '67 is all about the details. Filled seams around the headlight housings and the front and rear valances are a nice touch, as well as the 6-louvers punched in the hood. 1959 Cadillac taillights are used for the front parking lights. The interior is upholstered in red crushed velvet with red and white accents, and Autometer gauges let Dennis know what's going on under the hood. Performance items include a 3x2 bbl intake setup, Patriot headers and a Pertronix ignition system. A C4 transmission makes sure this steed humms along at the right RPM's.

1957 Chevy Corvette
1957 Chevy Corvette
Tony Pedro

What a clean '57! This one sports a 350 SBC and is stirred with a Super T-10 4-speed transmission. The polished aluminum Billet Specialty wheels add a nice finishing touch.

1960 Chevy Impala
1960 Chevy Impala
Phil DeMarco

This 4200 lb + all steel 1960 Impala covers the quarter mile in the 11's! An old school 427 rat ingests copious amounts of NOS with a custom grind cam making it all come together. A cast iron Super T-10 transmission is used, while a Dana rear crammed with 4.10 goodness makes sure this Impala gets out of the gate like it should.

1983 Ford Ranger
1983 Ford Ranger
John "Max" Riccio

Here's a 1983 Ford Ranger owned and driven by John "Max" Riccio of Max Custom Graphics (Huntington Station, NY). This ladder bar equipped truck runs in the Select NMRA Truck & Lightning Ford Series, Regional Footbrake events & 10.00 Index. The engine is a JA Performance built, motor only 349 using a Ford Racing "R" block as the core. The transmission is a Select Performance C4 equipped with a 5500 stall converter. Chassis work was done by the capable crew over at M.I. Performance in West Babylon. This wheels up Ranger has seen 10.05 @ 132 (as of 2007) with a 1.32 60 ft. John would like to thank Dr. Drew Performance & John Pluchino & Son Racing for their invaluable help. Special thanks to Jimmy Demato for all his support.

1991 Chevy Camaro Z28
1991 Chevy Camaro Z28
John Spadafora

Loaded with Autometer gauges in a custom dash setup along with an aftermarket shifter in the console, John will always know and control what's going on. A color matched rollbar is in place to protect it's occupants. Shifting chores are handled by a TH400 which in turn spins the 3.42 gears out back. But the real madness lies under the custom WS6 style hood. A 10:1 compression 454 bored .030 over with Edelbrock aluminum heads powers this F-Body! A set of custom wheels finishes it off in style.

1965 Rambler Marlin
1965 Rambler Marlin
Mike "Fishead" Morra

You're looking at the Islip National Speedway champion from 1969 to 1970. This '65 Rambler Marlin is not something you see everyday. That's because Mike own's one of only 10,327 ever produced! This one is powered by a 270HP AMX 327 engine, and backed by a 3-speed automatic. MSD ignition components make sure all is fired off without a hitch.

1986 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z
1986 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z
Steve Wallack

The meat of this F-Body is a 350 H.O. crate engine, the potatoes a B&M TH700R4 street/strip transmission. A full 3" exhaust runs to the back of the Camaro, expelling the fumes produces by the SBC and a 125HP shot of the giggle gas.

1970 Buick GS - October 2008 Cover Car
Chris O'Keefe

Shaking things up is a fully restored 1970 Buick GS. This particular example has been in his family for 20 years and counting. Running a rebuilt original 350 with work done by Jim V. (head work) and Ace Crankshaft, the finishing touches were done by S-K Speed Racing Engines. Shifting duties are handled by a TH400, which was built by Select Transmissions. The paint was sprayed 10 years ago by Chris' good friend John Murphy, who unfortunately passed away in April of 2008. He also had a hand in the assembly of this GS. Looking at this Buick in person, you would think it was just painted last week! Chris would like to thank his family for keeping the car and allowing him to fully restore it to the pristine condition it is in now.

1994 Chevy Corvette
1994 Chevy Corvette
John K.

This Vette can equally strut it's stuff on the track as well as on the show field. John readily accepts 10 second timeslips courtesy of a stroked LT1/4 engine with a Vortech supercharger force feeding it 13 lbs of goodness. A Gaseus Intercooling system aids in the power producing process. While cruising, John enjoys the 20 MPG this Vette gets as well as a custom 12 speaker sound system by L.I. Sounds.

1972 Chevy Chevelle
1972 Chevy Chevelle
Charlie Parento III

Charlie pilots his street driven '72 Chevelle to 10.90 ET's on the motor alone (2008)! A 150HP nitrous shot waits patiently to be utilized should he feel the need for a little bit more. An S-K Speed Racing Engines built 355 with aluminum heads reliably produces the power, run after run, mile after mile. An A1 Award Transmission TH400 launches this Chevelle with help from a transbrake, while the 12-bolt out back makes sure the power is delivered accordingly.

1968 Dodge Charger
1968 Dodge Charger
Steve Levine

A 440 Max Wedge "motorvates" this Mopar. The upper respiratory system consists of Indy cylinder heads and intake manifold, along with an 850cfm Proform double pumper. Solid lifters are actuated by a high lift cam. Following along the drivetrain, you'll find a Hemi crashbox transmission working with an 8-3/4" rear crammed with 4.56 gears and a SOx & Martin full posi unit. 11" wide BF Goodrich drag radials finishes it off.

1971 Chevy Monte Carlo SS
1971 Chevy Monte Carlo SS
Stephen Levanti

This rust free, triple black '71 Monte Carlo is one of only 1,919 Super Sports produced in 1971! Stephen is the 2nd owner of this Monte, which originated on the west coast. The original owner purchased it in 1974 and stored it for 26 years. It has a complete numbers matching drivetrain, however, it has been tweaked for street/strip duty. The engine has been punched out to 490 cubes, and converted to a roller motor, done by Don Cody of Smithtown. The transmission had been rebuilt and upgraded by Select Transmissions and has a 3000 stall converter. 17" Colorado CUstoms wheels are wrapped in Mickey Thompson drag radials out back. Running consistent 12.40's, this Monte has the power to back it's menacing looks.

1981 Chevy Monte Carlo SS
1981 Chevy Monte Carlo SS
Anthony Steiner

Running mid 10's on spray, this G-Body is no slouch! An Airflow Research headed 408 SBC churns out the horsepower with healthy internals such as an Eagle rotating assembly, stuffed with JE pistons. A Barry Grant carb and Edelbrock Super Victor intake resides between the heads. Four forward gears are provided by a B&M shifted 700R4. Assisting the launch is a set of Competition Engineering shocks, a Hotchkis rear suspension which is followed by a Ford 9" rear.

2008 Chevy Corvette Z06
2008 Chevy Corvette Z06
Ed Hollie

With only 400 miles on the clock, you can bet owner Ed Hollie shows mucho restraint while driving this beast until the engine is broken in properly. Having owned plenty of Corvettes in the past, Ed says, "This is the best one yet!" We couldn't agree more!

1955 Chevy Nomad
1955 Chevy Nomad
Tommy Aveni

This full chassis'd 1955 Chevy Nomad runs a 598 BBC. Not only that, it gets DRIVEN everywhere! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

3rd Gen Chevy Camaro - June 2008 Cover Car
3rd Gen Chevy Camaro - June 2008 Cover Car
Harold Caron

Just recently being completed, this Camaro ran a 9.65 @ 137 mph ET with a 1.37 60 ft. time! Marc Poldino at Hellbent Racecars took care of the chassis work and certified the chromoly cage, while "Monster" over at PCHS did the 352 SBC and massaged and worked the AFR 227 aluminum heads. Sitting in between them is a BDS 8-71 STG2 Air-Loc blower with EFI running a Big Stuff 3 ECU. A Select Performance transbrake'd TH400 with a 9" converter takes care of the twist, and Hoosier 33"x22.5"x15" Quick TIme Pro's take care of the stick. This picture was taken on the first launch with this combination (2008)! Harold must be doing something right! The best part is that this car is street driven to local cruise meets or just for joy rides!

2004 Ford Lightning
2004 Ford Lightning
Kenny

Here's Kenny from Brooklyn NY annihalating the rubber on those chrome dubs. This '04 Ford Lightning does so by the way of a built motor by Lloyd Lovelace of Springfielf Custom Auto Machine in Lorton, VA. The factory Eaton blower inhales with help form the +4 lb. pulley, Wide Mouth throttle body, and a cold air intake. A set of Xtreme Energy Comp Cams orchestrates the madness within. The thunder for the Lightning is produced by the long tube headers, hi-flow cats, and MAC exhaust. A you can see from the pic, the aftermarket traction bars do little to help this monster hook up! (circa 2008)

Custom Ford Explorer
Custom Ford Explorer
Bob Moro

Definitely not your average grocery getter Ford Explorer! Bob's X runs a Montana Brothers built tube chassis, suspended by a Pro Stock 4-link rear with an Air Ride Technology air ride system. The original body was chopped 4" at the top and channeled 6". The custom paint was done by Rich Giordano at G-Force Collision in Lindenhurst. A leather, suede and alligator interior cossets the occupants. And don't expect a small V6 under the hood either, what you'll find is a 604 BBC topped off with Dart 360 heads squeezing a 10:1 pump gas friendly compression. (2008)

This Cabernet Red 1989 Ford Mustang GT runs a new DSS 331 stroker with Edelbrock aluminum heads, a Performer RPM intake and a Ford Racing B303 bumpstick. Here is Bob W.'s Street Legal Land Speed Racer. It's a 2000 Honda Insight powered by a 2.0 Vtec engine coupled with a Garrett turbocharger. Weight is a paltry 1800 lbs! It is the current class record holder ECTA-LSR at 177 mph (2008). The SCTA allowed Bob this special car number in honor of the 343 FDNY lives lost on 9/11. Bob is retired from the FDNY of the Bronx.

1970 Chevy Nova
1970 Chevy Nova
Dennis Chambers

This Nova is running a 355 SBC and backed by a 4-speed stick. The 3.73 gears and Eaton posi unit call the 10-bolt rear home, while the Competition Engineering Drag Shocks and slapper bars help keep it planted on the tarmac. Lightweight Weld Draglite wheels make sure rotational weight is kept to a minimum. Hopefully he's got a good coat of wax on his lower rear quarter panels, or he'll be looking forward to cleaning off about 10,000 miles worth of molten rubber!

1970 Chevy Chevelle LS-6
1970 Chevy Chevelle LS-6
Matt Tumminello

This all stock, all original LS-6 Chevelle is seen here liquifying those poor bias ply tires. With only 39,000 original miles on the clock, this is one cherry A-Body that is as clean and straight as the day it rolled off the assembly line! This Chevelle was built to run hard, and it's good to see an immaculate example doing just that - over thirty years later!

Will Evers

Stock suspension, stock wheelwells, full interior, 100% streetable, running true 10.5" rubber....Yet, Will Evers lights up the scoreboards with low 8 second ET's! This Mustang destroys the competition's egos with a Twisted Wedge headed Dart 327. Capable of ingesting small animals (and possibly children, so keep them away), a Precision 88mm single turbo is utilized along with an Accel DFI system tuned by Jose at Mustang Magic in Deer Park. Backing it all up is a Dynamic TH400 with an Ultimate Converter Concepts torque converter. A Hellbent Racecars chassis makes sure this steed launches straight as an arrow. Will would like to thank Jose, Steve, Joey and Joe at Mustang Magic, Mark Poldino, and Lenny at Ultimate Converter Concepts.
Update (5/1/10): Since we ran Will's car back in 2008, it has gone through some major changes, so keep checking back here once we talk to this madman for updates!

A Magnafuel fuel system and a Dominator carb supplies plenty of high octane juice to the mill. Through a custom exhaust system fabricated by American Muffler of Rockville Centre, this Dodge darts to consistent 10.0's at 135 mph! Tim would like to thank the Mopar guru's at our Rockville Centre location for help with parts selection. No problem Tim!

With a 598 BBC and Olds Dart 16 degree heads, the S-K Speed Race Engines built rat spins a Rossler T210 3-speed automatic race transmission that produces 1.1 60 ft. times. The ProMax Engineering double frame rail chassis and huge 33" x 16" Goodyear slicks help make those times possible as well as the modular Ford 9" equipped with 4.29 gears. Ever wonder what 220 mph feels like? Well, Gary does! And he does so in 6.41 seconds! His propulsion machine of choice is a 1968 Camaro with a Montana Brothers built chassis. Power is produced via an 800 c.i. BBC that features an enormous 5.250" stroke and 4.800" bore! On top of that, a nitrous system consisting of four stages injects some serious N20 down it's throat. Gary runs VP Race Fuel's N02 blend exclusively because it produces the highest, cleanest horsepower. Thanks goes out to his crew Brian, Larry, Craig and Willy. (2007)

A jetted Edelbrock 650cfm carb and an HEI distributor sits atop the small block along with a set of shorty headers at the sides. A 700R4 transmission spins the 4.10 mini-spool'd rear. Craig Hoffman

This insanely clean '65 442 gets power from an Edelbrock aluminum headed 455. Equipped with a Victor intake and a Proform 850cfm carb, you better believe it has the oats to really move! And if that wasn't enough, a Nitrous Express Gemini system increases the oxygen content in the cylinders, while the MSD ignition system burns it all up. A Lakewood scattershield pleases track officials and makes sure the 455 doesn't overpower the 11" Ram Powergrip clutch that is controlled by an M20 transmission. Bringing it all together is a Chevy 12-bolt crammed with an Eaton HD diff, Moser axles and 3.73 gears. Craig custom made some of the brackets and gauge cluster on this machine which must be seen in person to fully appreciate.

Drivetrain durability is assured by way of a full manual C6, followed by a Ford 9" rear stuffed with a Detroit Locker and 3.89 gears. The Kook's custom headers and x-pipe system expels what's left of the combustion process. A full MSD ignition makes sure nothing is wasted. Keeping the engine in it's powerband is a set of 4.88 gears housed within a Ford 9", followed by a transbrake equipped Powerglide, which takes care of the two forward gears.

An S-K Speed Race Engine Shop tweaked 502 crate engine sits in the engine bay of this frame-off restored A-Body. A TH350 transmission does it's best to hold up to all the power, while a 12-bolt rear makes sure the power gets delivered to the Mickey Thompson drag radials. Shifting is handled by a Cheetah shifter. There is something special about this Chevelle however. It is dedicated to Lou's son, Chris, who passed away in 2004. After 3 years of driving it that way, he decided it needed more in the power department. So in went a 396 BBC and a TH400 trans (with a 2500 stall converter). The rear was swapped out for a 4.56 gear’d 12-Bolt rear from an Olds. The car was then painted black, and a hood scoop was added for that blower look. Don’t forget the addition of the Awooga horn! For the next 2 years the Camaro saw no changes.
So what do you think would happen to a young lad with a BBC Camaro? Well, Donnie started getting tickets like they were going out of style. So after he reached the limit of points before his license was to be revoked, Donnie decided to take it off the road for acouple of years so his record would get clean. In the Camaro went, into his parents’ garage, and the waiting game started. This was 1978.
As we all know that with time, life and priorities get in the way. Donnie got a good job on Wall Street that took up alot of his time, so the Camaro went on the back burner. Next he bought a house and turned the back burner on low. He then towed the Camaro from his parents’ house to his one car garage, where it spent the next 12 years as a garage shelf and storage space. Donnie got married in 1981 and started a family in 1984 so he had to turn the burner off. In 1992, they moved to their new home with a 2 car garage, where again, the Camaro was towed. But this time it sat for the next 16 years.
Donnie and his wife, Patricia, had saved enough money to get their kitchen redone. But one day as they were talking about it, she turned to him and said, “Why don’t you get the Camaro restored instead so you can still enjoy it?” He looked at her in shock, but she assured him it was the right thing to do.
Donnie has a disability that affects his legs and back, and she wanted to get the Camaro back on track while he could still enjoy it. So right about now, if you don’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, and also don’t think she is one of the best wives in the world, you’re probably not human.
After careful research and alot of questions, Donnie found the one place that he trusted to perform the restoration. S/P Classics (of Amity Village NY (631) 789-0363) fit the bill nicely. Here, the Camaro underwent a total body-off restoration and powertrain replacement. In went a ZZ 502 GM crate engine that would make little old ladies drool. We can’t list all the work S/P Classics had done on this beautiful
1-st Gen, but the pictures speak for themselves. New black paint was applied by High Grade Auto Body in East Meadow. The Awooga horn is still in place as well.
And there you have it. Donnie now has himself a sleek 1969 Camaro that he can enjoy.
P.S. “I owe my wife Patricia a new bathroom.”

Drew "Dr Drew" Amitrano

As a Master Tech at Huntington Chevrolet, Drew Amitrano of Huntington, NY knows how to tweak the General’s weapons. So it would be no surprise that his 1970 Chevelle SS runs a JA Performance LS6 454, a Select Performance

Going abit further into the BBC, you’ll find a Holley Dominator carb, an Edelbrock Victor intake, a solid-lifter cam, and factory closed chambered LS6 heads fully molested by Frankie Ford. And that’s not all, a
12-Bolt rear with 4.56 gears and Moser axles within the stock rear suspension were tweaked by M.I. Performance. A 1.48 60 ft. time is the result, along with a 10.40 @ 126 mph ET. Drew won Open Comp at Maple Grove back in 2003 with this

Added parts after just one week of ownership consists of a rear spoiler, Borla Stainless exhaust system, ABD Racing cold air intake, carbon fiber interior trim, Konig wheels and Porsche front calipers.

Power comes from the 1.8L, but a Progressive Turbo system pushing 6-14 lbs of boost assists things. An aftermarket intercooler, BOV and wastegate keep things in check to produce 222 horsepower!  This is all backed by a 6-speed manual. Charles' 350 small block is stuffed with KB forged pistons and connecting rods, and topped with milled and ported 882 heads. A Comp Cams bumpstick decides when air is ingested through the Edelbrock Victor Jr intake, and ousted from the Hooker headers and a custom 4" exhaust system. A worked 650cfm Holley proudly sits atop.

Shifting duties are handled by a T-5 5-speed, which sends power to an aluminum driveshaft and 3:73 gears.

Weight reduction was also a priority, so Charles relocated the battery to the trunk, removed all AC components, heater core and stereo system. A custom aluminum console also shaves some weight off as well. But all is not spartan inside. A Grant steering wheel and Corbeau racing seats make it a comfy place, and a new carpet and upholstery adds the finishing touch.

1957 Chevy
1957 Chevy
Dave Brenner & Ronnie Welker

Now here's a real blast from the past!

What you're looking at is a 1957 Chevy campaigned by Dave Brenner and Ronnie Welker circa 1966 to 1968. It ran in C/Modified Production, E/Gas and F/Gas classes. The two are still friends, but now reside in parts of Florida.

Running gear consisted of '62 Corvette 327 with fuelie heads and a 283 crank destroked to a 301. A dual quad tunnel ram setup sat at the top with a roller cam in the middle. 9" slicks and an Oldsmobile posi with 5.86 gears were transmissted power from a Muncie 4-speed.

Weighing in at 3200 lbs., it ran the national record ET of 12 flat at 121 MPH. Remember, this was in the late '60's!

Later in 1969 the duo added a Racer Brown roller cam setup and heads from Valley Heads in California. Dick Moroso built the carburetors. The '57 was run until 1970 when the engine lost oil pressure at about 3/4 down the track. Bummer too, because this led to the end of  their racing days.

Here's some words from Dave's son, Mike,

"I remember one of his (Dave's) biggest competitors of the day was a Corvette named Rotunda. That was also when the big block rats were coming out. One of my favorite memories was when I went to National Speedway and my dad was up against a big block Chevy. When they got to the line the announcer knew my dad's car. He made a comment about the big block revving up and then he announced to the crowd "wait until you hear Dave's mouse roar!". My father won that day!

Drag racing was a big part of my early days. I was and still am very proud of my dad's accomplishments. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the '57 because no matter what the time of night they finished working on it, whether installing or tweaking parts, he would go for a test drive!"

What a great story! When you hear things like this you realize the rich history that was drag racing here on Long Island.

We'd love to hear more "Blast from the Past" stories and see your pictures, so please don't hesitate to send us images and stories of your past experiences!
